Magdalena Dembinska

Magdalena Dembińska is associate professor of Political Science and Director of the bachelor program in International Studies at the Université de Montréal. In 2018, she also joined the management team of the Montreal Centre for International Studies (CÉRIUM). Her comparative research focuses on identity politics and conflict, state- and nation-building, nationalism and diversity, in Eurasia and Central Europe. Her current research agenda is threefold: (1) state- and nation-building in ethnically heterogeneous Transnistria (Moldova) and Abkhazia (Georgia); (2) Europe-Russia relations at the border, in Moldova, Kaliningrad and Estonia (SSHRC-funded project in collaboration with Frédéric Mérand, UdeM); and (3) kin-state policies, Poland and its external minorities in Lithuania, Ukraine and Belarus. Her publications include a monograph with Presses universitaires de Rennes (PUR) on Vivre ensemble dans la diversité culturelle. Europe centrale et orientale après 1989 (2012), articles in peer-reviewed specialized journals such as International Studies Review, Nations and Nationalism, Federal and Regional Studies, Ethnopolitics, Comparative Political Studies, East European Politics and Societies, Nationalities Papers, and chapters in a number of edited volumes. She teaches courses on nationalism, ethnic conflict, Eurasian and European political systems. She serves on the editorial boards of the European Yearbook of Minority Issues, the Connexe. Les espaces post-communistes en question(s) and European and Regional Studies. She also serves as teasurer to the Société québécoise de science politique (SQSP) and is co-directing the CRIDAQ Observatoire des diasporas (Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la diversité et la démocratie).
